Argo Blue

Argo starch,
blue and boiling
in a cast iron kettle,

the stuff that kept the points
of my father’s cuffs
and collars
sharp.

Even the linens
were subjected to it
then ironed with a flatiron,
stiff and unrelenting

like the wind
in December
on that failing farm.
