An Order to His Ideas

for Wallace Stevens

He speaks of thoughts
not principles, of poets
not prophets, though some
would say they are the same.

The poem is supreme,
not its truth and not
its rhythm, but its being.
It is a fiction

that finds a greater truth,
a truth beyond what we
have known.  Undeniably more
than implication

this supplication to the word,
this abstract pleasure
that is untainted…pure
in its searching.

In every moment there is
a poem and in that poem
is our knowing– and our being,
brief as it is.
